These exercises were developed in the early 1980s while I was a student at Stony Brook University. They were a byproduct of a supervised independent research project that I did on the anatomy of the hand as it pertained to playing the piano. My motivation for doing it came from my own frustration with the existing methodologies. At the time, I loved the piano so much that I was willing to do anything it took to get better. I would practice 8 to 12 hours per day and dedicated a major portion of this time to practicing piano exercises. It seemed like no-matter how hard or long I practiced, my technique was only improving marginally. I then began questioning if there was a better way.
At first I started reading through the existing technique books but could not find what I was looking for. I realized that the pianist that wrote these books were most likely prodigies so they never really struggled with technique the way I did. They say you teach best what you need to learn. I will never forget my reaction to the philosophy outlined in Walter Gieseking`s book, `Shortest Way to Pianistic Perfection` that it was the ear that controlled the 4th and 5th finger. Even though this man was a great pianist, this statement did not ring true. Common inconsistencies like this in the existing literature made me turn to science to separate fact from fiction. I believed that if I knew my own hand, I would have more control of my musical destiny. So I turned to anatomy.
Knowing the anatomy of the hand does separate fact from fiction. The hand is an amazing creation. Its complexity perplexes even the greatest hand surgeons. It is little wonder that it should perplex us pianists as well. The hand is nature`s toolbox for working at the piano. It contains many tools. We should have knowledge of these tools so we can pick the right tool for the right job. Some times we just use the tools that move the fingers up and down. Other times we use the tools that bend the fingers in and out and from side to side. It would be nice to know what we are using and when. Doing these exercises will give you a working knowledge of this. This knowledge will help you to diagnose your problems and figure out how to solve them. I also hope these exercises will give you a new love and appreciation for piano technique. A window into this world will open a whole new realm of pianistic possibilities to you. I know as a composer that it opened new areas of musical creativity to me. The exercises came first before composing my piano work `The City Of God`, which exemplifies innovative pianistic technique. It was never my intention to evangelize these exercises but since I have received so many requests for them, I have decided to publish them on the Internet. For those of you who have wanted to get to the bottom line on piano technique, the answers are right here.

To make a happy song sound sad, replace major chords with minor chords two letter names down. Examples:

To put chords to a melody: work out the key center for the melody, and try out the first, second, and fifth chords from that key center; select the chord that sounds best. Example: if the melody is in C major, sing while you play the C (the first), Dm (the second), and G7 (the fifth) chords with your voice. Pick the chord that sounds best.

First select the key or keys you want to study. Then specify which scale degrees to include in your questions. Drill down further to select the exact inversions to include. Once you are ready just click on the Start button to play. One to seven random chords will be played on the musical staff from within the parameters that you have defined. You answer the questions by playing the correct notes on the computerized piano. You click the piano keys in the same order that you read the chord in. For example, if the chord were C Major you would answer by playing C, E, and G on the piano. The notes youve selected will remain highlighted and numbered 1, 2, and 3 on the piano until the chord is complete. If you have accidentally selected a wrong note, just click on the note again and it will be cleared. The interface is so easy that even a 4 year old could use this program. I have not included the option to use a midi keyboard because I think it would distract from the lesson. The Music Chord Teacher is teaching several skills simultaneously so you really need the hands on experience to reap all its benefits.

This program includes many options and features. As with my other programs it includes a student name and grade database. Chord Teacher goes one step further by including and optional floating history window. This window keeps you up to date with all the detail of the game in progress. Zero in on those real trouble spots. When your done save it as a web page! Show your friends or teacher that you really did practice. These features make the program great for the classroom or music studio.

This program is very easy to use. All the music graphics are very large and easy to read. Each interactive screen elements has help tips attached to quid you along the way. Increase the games excitement by turning on the optional note timer. If you don`t shoot the notes down within the given time, they will blow up! Objective

This program will train your inner ear to recognize simple and complex rhythmic patterns at sight. It develops both the visual and audible skills needed to decipher the rhythmic layer of music. You will learn how to play note patterns based on their notational value and you will learn how to notate them based on how they sound. These encoding and decoding skills are similar to the skills used while reading. You know how to spell words based on their pronunciations and you know how to pronounce words based on their spelling. In reading this exchange happens almost instantly. Ideally, the same should happen while reading music. Reading rhythmic patterns will become as easy as reading words. This is a great skill for any musician or composer. It will greatly improve your musicianship. You can have good rhythm too!



How It Works

The game is setup up to incrementally develop the skills mentioned above. First you must choose the rhythmic patterns to include in your lesson. This is easily done via the ?Patterns? tab in the ?Setup? window.
Check the rhythm patterns you want to include in your measures. You can save your own lessons or choose from the sample lessons included with the program. There are two modes of play, ?Question & Answer? and ?Rhythmic Dictation?. You will do most of you work in Question & Answer mode. Mode one is like an animated multiple-choice test. You must fill in the sample measure by clicking on the correct rhythmic button for each beat. Clicking on the button will sound the rhythm pattern through QuickTime?s midi player. Clicking on the note patterns inside the measure will count the beats using Text To Speech. Both these audible clues help to reinforce the patterns being studied. The second mode ?Rhythmic Dictation? is a computerized dictation session. The program will play the sample measure and you must tap it back on the instrument of your choice. You must play it back in the time given or it will skip to the next measure. It is a free style dictation test. There is no judge except your teacher or your own ear.
